Why does bb spindle length matter...

Postby 2TrakMind » Mon Jan 29, 2018 4:27 pm

I want to upgrade my crankset on my Mongoose Terrex. I've upgraded my bottom bracket, and am seeing that each cranset tells what size bb spindle it will work with. Anyone know why it matters, as long as I but one that is made for the square taper spindle? Thanks!

1. The individual cranksets have a particular taper grind that could differ from another.
2. Chainline differences between different spindle lengths could affect the smooth shifting and chain life if not matched somewhat properly.
3. Tire clearance is directly affected in climbing gears. too narrow, and a Mongoose Terrex plus size tire could contact the chain. Wide tire, wide 135-142 hub, 120 or longer spindle length could be better. On a road bike with 130mm between dropouts, and 23 or 25mm wide tires, a 113 or so spindle length could be better.
