Headset adapters???

Postby bones72751 » Thu Sep 07, 2017 9:53 pm

Anyone ever look for or find a headset adapter (cups, bearings, races) to convert a 1" threaded to a 1 1/8" threadless?

There are a couple out there, but they're for specific frames, like the old Schwinn cruisers that have large bearings with the 1" threaded steerer.
If there's room for the 1 1/8 steerer tube, you might be able to use the 1 1/8 bearing races in the headset cups you have now, but replacing the ball bearings with smaller bb's.
I have 2 bikes I'd love to do this with, but one has top tube and down tubes gusseted and brazed inside the head tube. The other bike's bearing cups are too small to get the 1 1/8 tube through. A file and a lot of time spent fitting might get me in, but the cup inserts could be weakened by removing the material. Some guys on other forums have considered using cups with insert ends on the outside of the frame, but I haven't seen much success with that idea.

Yeah, I'd be hesitant to hone it out for MTB purposes. Street cruisers, I probably wouldn't worry about it too much though. I'll have to tear it apart today and see what I've got to work with.

Exnay on the adaptersey.... Apparently it's a 1 1/8" threaded headset. Test fit my crappy 1.125 fork and it fits just right, you know except for the not threaded part....

This is the bike in progress BTW.... And I'm so so glad they make adapters now for disc calipers on the rear. They didn't 7ish years ago. ImageImage
