Trail-a-bike? Any experiences/opinons?

Postby Seanmor » Thu Jun 30, 2011 12:29 am

My 4 year old does her best to keep up on family rides with her 16" bmx single speed bike but usually peters out long before the rest of us are warmed up. We have an Intex bike trailer that I use when we don't want to get slowed down but I really want her to get the exercise and not leave her out of the fun. To this end, I've been researching trail-a-bike type bikes. From reading reviews on Amazon and other places, it seems the Adams Trail-a-Bike is the best all-around model except for maybe the Burley which costs much more.

Has anyone here used one of these types of bikes? I'm ready to buy a used trail-a-bike used but I'd like to be sure there are no safety issues or concerns.

Sean--

Brother and Sister-in-Law have one..it is a model with a freewheel in the back, so the little one doesn't really have to pedal when they get tired. All is good until the child decides to nod off asleep. Don't laugh, it happened. Momma was following along behind Dad and son and almost RAN OVER 4-year old son, when he fell off..he's very tough though, just skinned him up a little, and he did wake right up..that was the end of using the Trail-a-bike and when older, son rode his own...

My grandson has mild cerebral palsy and his mom and dad (my daughter and son-in-law) have been looking at a trail-a-bike that has a backrest. I don't recall the name of it offhand but it's clearly safer for a kid who might doze off or who has muscular control problems of any sort.

OMG! I didn't think about that. My 4 year old has fallen asleep in the trailer so I know it is very likely to happen. I think that is enough to make me reconsider the idea. I guess I'll just have to keep her in the trailer when we want to ride longer at a good pace.

Thanks for the input!

My brother in law and niece use one, haven't heard of her falling asleep but that sure does seem a real possibility. Yikes!

Well we did end up getting trailgator tow bar to attach my daughter's bike to mine. It works pretty well except when she rides her coaster brake. I had to do some custom bending to reduce side play so she wasn't leaning so much but other than that I'm happy with the product.
