Recommendations for a geared bike for my 8 year old

Postby Seanmor » Mon Jun 27, 2011 9:36 pm

Hello, My son will be turning 8 soon and he keeps up with me and my wife on our rides of up to 10 miles on his bmx single speed bike. I'd like to get him in to a 20 inch bike with gears. I have seen the Specialized Hotrock and some Trek bikes but I haven't seen anything in that size at a BBB.
Any recommendations out there?
Thanks,
Sean

This is the one you might have been thinking of.

I'm just worried about the weight (30lbs + ) being to much for him. My bike doesn't even weigh that much. If the big box bikes are all to heavy, I might have to look for a used LBS bike on Craigslist. Not sure if those are also in the same weight range though.

My 9 year old is riding a 2009 KHS Raptor 20" Mountain bike. If you can find a 2009 or older they are aluminum framed and very light. 2010 and up went back to cro moly frames (price also dropped $80). I have never weighed it but my son is very small and it fits him great and I am sure it is lighter than his Walmart BMX. Not sure what your budget is, these things (2009 models) retailed for $300 and I got his off Ebay lightly used for $170 shipped to my door. But they are pretty rare so good luck in your search. It took me quite a while to find any decent 20" mountain bike, but I am thrilled with what we have.

Thanks, I'll add that one to my list. So far these are the models I'm searching Craigslist for:

Raptor KHS
Hotrock Specialized
Mini Mesa Schwinn
Octane 20 Diamondback
MT 60 Trek
Mountain Lion Trek
XTC 150 Giant
Cobra Diamondback
Striker Raleigh
Q20 Felt
Stomper 20 GT
Makena Kona
MX20 Ridgeback

I figure on spending $100 to $150 but lower of course would be a bonus. Right now it's prime biking weather so the prices seem to have gone up since about a month or two ago.

Due to the wonders of the web I have no idea if this is a current offer or a cached copy of a sale from 2 years ago. And the price is a little above the price range you stated, plus shipping if they even offer it. But I figured it was worth posting.

Well I went the Ebay route and bought a used 2008 Schwinn Mini Mesa 20". The price was in line with what I have seen on Craigslist and it will save me from driving all over the SF Bay Area.

Well that was pretty fast, took me a little longer to find one. But you started with a much better list of 20" mtb bikes than I did. If you don't mind me asking, what did you have to give for it?

Found the listing. Wow, that was a nice price! Hope your son enjoys as much as my son is enjoying his!

Yeah it's a used 2008 model so it should be pretty decent. I want to get my son used to shifting and braking now. Now I just need to get a trail-a-bike for my 4 year old so she can keep up. The Intex bike trailer we currently use is killing me and she gets no exercise.
