What to eat when you're headed out in the cold?

I like to eat several ounces of nuts a few hours ahead. I hear avocado is a superfoood for similar purposes. Anyone else conscious of healthy fat intake to warm the blood?

Shot of Jack and the blood flows nice and warm.

In general you'll want both carbs and protein. I like energy bars. I avoid anything alcoholic when I'm riding regardless of whether it's cold or hot. If it's hot then the alcohol will dehydrate you (which is why you actually do pee more when you drink beer) and if it's cold the alcohol makes you think you're warm while moving blood supplies away from your extremities.

Hot chocolate in a thermos is good for a break.

Take water.. you still need water. I use a "fanny pack" under my wind shell so it doesn't freeze. Run the tube up under clothing because that part freezes first.

Jerky makes a nice snack food, too. And nuts are always good.

The "Poor Guy on a Bike" ate a lot of raw Pop Tarts. No toaster on the road. WM sells one version called *Chocolate Fudge* that would work.
