Fugly II

Postby jimmie65 » Sun Dec 10, 2017 11:55 am

Fugly was one of my favorite mountain bikes, a beat-up Motobecane HT400 I picked up for almost nothing and restored. I ended up selling her when the garage got too full and have regretted it every since. I loved having a beatup mountain bike that no one would ever steal and that was bullet-proof.

Enter the Iron Horse Yakuza 5.1. A kid had her for sale on CL for $60. She fit my need for a beater and a 29er all in one.
Test ride wasn't great - no brakes, slipping gears, broken pedals. Gave the kid $40, though.

Updates so far:
Avid BB5s installed; I won't be downhilling on Fugly II, so these will be adequate (Fugly I also had Avid BB5s).
New rear shifter installed. Cables replaced. Everything tightened.
Had the LBS replace the bottom bracket.
Rear hub was loose, so it was tightened.
Wellgo pedals and toe clips.
WTB Silverado saddle.
Origin8 "batwing" bars (I don't remember the exact model) and Ergon GP2 grips.
Bontrager disk-compatible rack.

That IS Awesome!
The batwing bars are cool, they feel like they have a lot of sweep, but they're still forward and out of the way.
I'm not saying I'd steal it, but if I were you, I'd still lock it up when out and about :P
It doesn't look that fugly to me.

Someone locally has a used Rockshox Reba RL for sale for $100; it looks to be a newer Solo (only 1 air intake). Anyone have any experience with this shock or with buying used shocks?
Considering the MSRP, this would be a great deal if the shock is good.

Fugly II got new tires today - well, she got the first one 3 weeks ago but the 2nd was an Amazon warehouse deal - bad idea for tires. So after waiting for the refund and a new tire to be shipped, Fugly II got both tires.
CST Rock Hound 2.4, .3 inches wider than the original tires. I probably could have fit 2.5s on there.

New seat as well

Do you ride with your seat pointed down? I set my seat level.

For some reason, this post was giving me trouble levelling the seat and I wanted to snap a pic before it got dark.
I usually like my seat angled down a degree or so. With the seat, with a slight hook on this nose and a subtle rise in the cheek area, I ended up perfectly level. Might end up pointing up a degree when it's all done.

I don't think your bike is ugly. I hope your bike is not upset with you for naming it Fugly ll. .

My wife doesn't like the name either. She also wants me to keep the stickers, which I had planned on peeling off eventually.
I like the ruggedness of the bike but don't consider it an attractive bike. Considering the price point I paid, it was just intended as a beater. But now with the wider tires and a better bottom bracket, I really like how it rides.
If my post-Christmas budget allows, I'm going to pick up a better fork and then start looking for some better wheels.
