Unseasonably Warm...

We've had highs in the lower to mid-40s (F) here over the past ten days and it looks like it will continue. Snow is all gone, the lake is thawing, even the fishpond is thawing....

So at 3:45pm two days ago my favorite 9-year-old knocked on my door with her BMX in hand; literally "in hand". Her bike was right next to her so close that the storm door wouldn't open all the way....

She was demanding that I get on my Deception Mongoose and ride with her!

So, I did.

Not far but it was at least the first ride of 2018 and I have to say that I enjoyed it. Not exactly balmy and I couldn't find my half-gloves but it was still fun. And for once she didn't make me follower her!

75 in two months!

lol.. Here in the sticks of Kentucky, we had exactly 2 days above normal temp, and now we're right back under a sheet of freezing rain, snow, and ice. This is the first year in a really long time that my bikes have been so clean and tucked so neatly indoors.

Keep on riding on WDR!

There is very little resembling winter here in Europe with fall like temperatures and rain and clouds for two months straight. We recovered from a large wind storm that recorded 100 mph gust in the mountains not that far from where I am in Bern..For the most part the street biking crowd is out and about but the mountains and hills are soaking wet. In Grindlewald, the ski tourist season is good above 2,000 meters but below that its hit or miss on the weekends. Massive winter tourist here including many Americans on the European tour and I have even spoken with many collegiate tourist seeing Europe for the first time. Expecting lower temperatures later this month with the jet stream changing and less precipitation but on the whole its warm here. Expect flooding if the jet steam changes again and most likely Germany.

Looks like we're going to have to struggle through another week in the mid 70's.

We've got snow forecast for Tuesday, before climbing back to the 70s next weekend. That will be a nice change, since all the warm weather lately has been in the middle of the week with the cold. wet weather saved for Saturday and Sunday.

Meanwhile, in Australia, the temperatures are so high that the bats are having issues; their brains are overheated and they're dying from it. I don't cycle in temps over about 90F (which... what?.... 34C?) and even then I choose mornings if I can. I'm not sure how anyone can live through temps much higher than 115F.

We have had a typical cycle lately of a very cold spell in December and then warmer in January (central WA state USA). (There is a WA in Australia so I like to be more explicit.)

For 20 years the lake in front of our house was frozen from shore-to-shore by November 15 and did not that at all until March 15. Now, and for the past 6 to 8 years, it's been freezing between December 1 and December 15 and thawing out at some point in Feb. This year, after the typical cold December, daytime temperatures have stayed in the mid-to-upper 30s and into the mid-40s. My fish pond is ice free but the lake remains (thin) ice.

The 9-year-old showed up at my door two days ago but I'm recovering from some sort of noro-virus (a "cold") and begged off. She made me go out and pump the tires up to pressure, gave me a hug, and pedaled off into the sunset.....

I like hugs....

The weather pattern changed again and we are getting a Atlantic flow that's pounding Europe with high wind and rain. To the north they are getting pounded with snow and there will be major flooding I believe if this continues. The whole Europe is more like Ireland this year.

Another week of daytime temps in the 40s (F).
With rain.
We're more like Seattle!
