Folks its 60 degrees here in Bern, Switzerland and its bike season in January. The whole town is riding and I am very serious. There were so many cyclist outside today that from about midday onward I can watch what looks like a bicycle parade. EBIKES are dominating the Swiss bike makeup here and the roadies get pretty inspired to go faster when grandma is passing them on her ebike.

Not all of the USA has been going through those cold blasts...

Edit: to clarify, we live 160 miles east of Seattle, WA with the Cascade Mtns. separating us.

Here in the Pacific Northwest it has been unusually warm. It was 51F yesterday in an area that typically has very cold winters. In fact the lake in front of my house would freese from shore-to-shore about the middle of November and not thaw (no open water) until the middle of March. This was regular from 1999 until 2010.

However the dates began to converge in about 2011. This year the lake froze shore-to-shore on December 10th and on Friday, January 26, 2018 the lake was entirely free of ice!!!

So from three months ice skating down to zero months of ice skating (the ice never got thick enough for safe skating); and under six weeks of frozen water!

It's been over 40F every day for a month and today it is supposed to get to 47F. Has not been below 30F in two weeks.

In November of 2017 we did have a 3-week cold spell in which temps got down into the teens at night and did not get above freezing at all.

Last winter (2016-2017) the pattern was similar; very cold spell in late fall but then a warm winter with a lot of rain. The joke around here is that we've turned into Seattle.

It's disturbing to see that Europe is going through much the same pattern.

I tried doing a trail ride Saturday after being sick for 5 weeks. Still not completely better, but I was able to complete the ride. A lady on the ride crashed hard at the end of the ride. Her nice bike was damaged and she was injured as well. Someone drove her to the hospital to get xray and CT since she was knocked unconscious briefly and then was coughing up blood briefly. She ended up with a separated shoulder and bruises.

Eight of us did a 10 mile trail ride today. We took several rest stops. At the half way point we took a snack break and took a group picture (minus the picture taker).
